Film Club at the Gallery of Modern Art. But what to watch? We wanted to show how story a story can do without heavy-handed dialogue. Wall-e, the Lion King, Star Wars, Jurrassic Park, E.T, the Beauty and the Beast and Raiders of the Lost Arc don’t rely on wordy exposition. They speak to everybody.
No matter your language level, they sweep you along on the ride of archetypal storytelling. We watched movie trailers, discussed preferences and took a vote. Action movie romp ‘Raiders of the Lost Arc’ won out. I was surprised that people were so keen on an adventure-action movie.
Hiding Behind Cushions
I quickly understood the appeal. As soon as Indy and Satipo peel huge spiders off each other’s back in the opening cave scene, everybody was hooked on the adventure. And excited about what was to come. I heard squeals of surprise, suspense, premonition and delight from behind sofa cushions. We cheered for our heroes Indy and Marion. We wanted them to find the Arc, outsmart the Nazis, protect their friends and overcome all obstacles in their way.
People watched Marion and Indy’s perilous journey through the snake pit almost entirely from behind cushions! We only put them down when Marion, Indy and their friends were safe from the ghosts and the Arc (momentarily … ) rescued out of evil hands. I had forgotten how much I enjoy a good romp! The magic of the movies.
