We are back at GOMA Learning Studio to experiment with story ideas and filming techniques. The group felt it was important to speak to new arrivals directly, so that their advice felt more personal. We came up with three narrative scenes. All featured one character who ‘mentors’ the viewer by directly speaking to camera.
Our themes were ‘Friends and Community’: a story about a young person who makes friends when joining a football club; ‘College and Education’: a difficult first day in an ESOL class; and ‘Life in Scotland’: a young person who navigates their new life with the help of people they can trust.
We improvised young people’s ideas, experimented with non-verbal scene building techniques and then layered short dialogue scenes on top. All vignettes culminated in a direct address to camera encouraging their viewer – other young new arrivals – that a new life is possible.
